Short form poetry

When I am having a hard time thinking of what to write, I tend to look up “short form poetry.” It seems a good exercise for writing when ideas and time are short.

Today I have learned about a form called the Cinquain. It is described as:

“In the early 1900s, an American poet named Adelaide Crapsey, inspired by Japanese haiku and tanka verse, created a simple five-line poetic form. The subject matter is usually nature, in keeping with her inspiration, and the mood is energetic.”

I thought I would give it a try.

The storm,
with winds and waves
rages against the coast
as we remember Katrina,
Ida.
